Becoming Mondriaan brings the personal letters of Piet Mondrian into the concert hall. The New Amsterdam Trio plays live improvised music while Mondrian's own letters, drawn from the Mondrian Papers archive, are read aloud. Funny, exacting, and occasionally devastating, the letters reveal someone his paintings give no hint of: a nineteen-year-old petitioning the Queen Regent for a scholarship, a working painter struggling to pay rent, a man who had worked out exactly what he required from solitude, from friendship, from art itself. The result is a portrait of Mondrian before fame, before the grid paintings, before the world caught up with him.
